Remaining Artifacts from Chagos Islands

These images were taken at The United States Seabee Museum, Port Hueneme, California in July, 2012. The mission of the U.S. Navy Seabee Museum is to select, collect, preserve and display historic material relating to the history of the Naval Construction Force, better known as the SEABEES, and the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps.

The artifacts photographed were items which remained in the Chagossian homes after eviction. Navy personnel stationed on Diego Garcia sent the items to the museum to be housed and preserved. They have remained under the care of the museum ever since. I was given permission by the United States Seabee Museum to photograph the artifacts for inclusion in this project. Along with items from the military operation, this is the biggest selection of tools and objects from plantation life remaining outside of the Chagos Islands today.
